It is not easy for researchers to carry out their tasks in times of economic crisis, but no more difficult than it is for the rest of the population, who have to adapt to a period not of growth, but of recession. At all times in history, there have been difficult moments for scientific investigation, although this has never prevented talented researchers from bringing new knowledge to humanity. We are pleased to be able to say that, as this annual report shows, we have made significant advances which are of great importance to our health system, such as the Di@bet.es Study, which provides us with accurate information on the prevalence of diabetes in the Spanish population, and the results obtained by researchers using the Metabolomics Platform. We single these out because they are collective achievements, a general effort on the part of all our researchers. Ramon Gomis, Ciberdem Scientific Director.
Ciberdem, the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders, began its activity over three years ago and it is now time to take stock of its achievements. Some are already evident and among these is the qualitative leap forward as regards the number and excellence of publications. To this success we should add others such as the ability of groups to work together, especially in the case of clinical and basic research groups, which is a clear indication of our strong commitment to translational research, as well as an obvious demonstration that these associations between groups are advantageous when it comes to obtaining funding. All of this will soon allow us to put Ciberdem firmly on the map of competitive biomedical research in Europe. Ramon Gomis, Ciberdem Scientific Director.
Biomedical research demands an on-going evaluation that serves as an indicator of the level of excellence attained using the resources that public and private entities devote to subsidizing research projects. Ciberdem, the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre (CIBER) in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders, is not immune to this process; on the contrary, for a public research institution, these demands are even greater. In this sense, the present Annual Report is a mirror which reflects the scientific outputs and outcomes of Ciberdem and is therefore essential to the continued evaluation of the research groups that comprise this CIBER. Ramon Gomis, Ciberdem Scientific Director.
